Domitor acquaints you of the recent publication of a book about music for silent films, "Metapartiture. Comporre musica per i film muti".

("Metascores. Composing music for silent films") by Marco Bellano, a PhD student of cinema at the University of Padova (Italy). It is a study on the musical strategies that cinema composers developed in relation to the silent repertoire. The first part (Introduction and Chapter I-II) deals with historical information about the early practice of film music, as well as with an outline of the main semiotic problems that an analysis of music for silents must face. The second part (Chapter III-IV and Conclusion) proposes a comparative study about different scores written for two major silent films: “Metropolis” by Fritz Lang and “The General” by Buster Keaton and Clyde Bruckman. In particular, for Metropolis the comparison is between the original score by Gottfried Huppertz and the 2001 score by Bernd Schultheis; for The General, the comparison deals with the 1995 score by Robert Israel and the 2004 score by Hisaishi Joe.
