Last fall (2007), the Département d’histoire de l’art et d’études cinématographiques at the Université de Montréal launched its new Ph.D. program in Film Studies. Fourteen new students, from Canada and Europe, were admitted into the program, 6 of them jointly (cotutelle) with European universities.

The program now includes an international graduate seminar offered jointly by the Université de Montréal and Université Paris 3 (Sorbonne Nouvelle). This annual seminar will be taught by two professors from Université Paris 3 and two professors from the Université de Montréal. This year, the seminar is given by Serge Cardinal (Montréal), Philippe Dubois (Paris 3), André Gaudreault (Montréal) and Laurent Jullier (Paris 3).

The Université de Montréal is a top-rate academic environment for graduate research in film studies. Most doctoral candidates are part of funded research teams, such as the Groupe de recherche sur l'avènement et la formation des institutions cinématographique et scénique (GRAFICS) or the Centre for Research into Intermediality (CRI). The Département d’histoire de l’art et d’études cinématographiques is also associated with two scholarly publications: CiNéMAS and Intermédialités.

The program grants its best doctoral students scholarships and paid teaching, teaching assistantship and research opportunities.

The application deadline for the autumn 2008 term is May 1. All relevant information on the program can be found on our website (www.histart.umontreal.ca). For additional information, please contact professors André Gaudreault (andre.gaudreault@umontreal.ca) or Olivier Asselin (o.asselin@umontreal.ca).
